AI Image Repair: CompleteMe Restores and Edits Human Images

CompleteMe, a new AI-powered image completion system, excels at restoring and editing human images, outperforming existing methods in various benchmarks. Developed through a collaboration between UC Merced and Adobe, it uses a dual U-Net architecture and a Region-Focused Attention (RFA) block to intelligently fill in missing or occluded parts of images. Unlike previous approaches, CompleteMe leverages supplementary reference images to guide the completion process, ensuring accurate detail and semantic coherence, even with complex poses and clothing patterns. This reference-based approach allows for tasks like virtual try-on and sophisticated photo editing. The system incorporates multiple reference inputs flexibly, preserving fine-grained appearance information. It uses a Reference U-Net for integrating reference material and a cohesive U-Net for the final result, employing CLIP for semantic features and a decoupled cross-attention mechanism for improved realism. CompleteMe’s developers have created a new benchmark dataset for evaluating reference-based image completion, testing against various methods, including AnyDoor, LeftRefill, and MimicBrush. Results show CompleteMe leading in most perceptual metrics and user studies, demonstrating superior visual fidelity. However, the code remains proprietary. While the system shows promise for professionals in fields like fashion and photo editing, the lack of publicly available code limits its accessibility to researchers and developers. CompleteMe’s reliance on a substantial dataset for training and the need for powerful GPUs (eight NVIDIA A100s were used in training) also pose limitations.
