How Pennymac Uses AI to Speed Up Home Loans

Pennymac now uses AI agents to handle 40% to 45% of its backend mortgage fulfillment work, according to a conversation between the company and Vesta, an AI company that builds tools for mortgage lenders.

Jensen Szakaly, who leads Pennymac's Mortgage Fulfillment Division, and Vesta CEO Mike Yu talked with HousingWire about how this works. They explained how Pennymac keeps people in charge of the AI, and what this change means for workers at the company.

Mortgage fulfillment is the behind-the-scenes work that happens after you apply for a home loan. It includes checking your documents, reviewing your income, and getting your loan ready to close. This site exists to explain terms like this so you do not need a dictionary to follow the news.

Szakaly said the goal of using AI is not just to save money or move faster. He said the real point is to make the loan process easier for the person taking out the mortgage. He called a typical mortgage transaction complex and long, and said that is the problem Pennymac wants to fix.

Yu said none of this works without good data behind the scenes. He said that without the right setup, it would be hard for AI agents to work well with people. He said the goal is to let multiple AI agents look at everything a borrower submitted and give an answer in minutes instead of in 20 minutes.

Before AI agents even entered the picture, Pennymac saw big gains just from upgrading its basic systems. Szakaly said the company saw a 30% to 50% efficiency gain from better automation, better software connections called APIs, and a more modern, easier-to-use system. AI agents then built on top of that.

Szakaly said AI agents now handle about 40% to 45% of backend fulfillment work, with another 15% to 20% currently being built. He said tasks that used to take days now take minutes. He also said the time it takes to get a conditional loan approval has been cut in half.

What this means for you

If you are applying for a mortgage with a lender using this kind of technology, your loan may move faster than it used to. Steps that once took days, like checking your paperwork, may now take minutes.

  1. Ask your lender if they use AI tools in the loan process.
  2. Ask how much human review happens alongside the AI.
  3. Keep your documents ready so any automated checks go smoothly.

How Pennymac keeps control over the AI

Szakaly said Pennymac treats AI agents like new employees. The company tests them, watches their work closely, and slowly gives them more responsibility over time. He said Pennymac rolls out updates daily and always starts with full human oversight.

He said this oversight is how the company manages risk. Szakaly said people make mistakes and AI agents can too, so Pennymac runs ongoing quality checks on every agent.

Yu said the standard for AI agents has to be higher than the standard for people. He said agents need to be more reliable and more consistent than humans. He said this means Pennymac needs strong testing and ongoing monitoring of how the agents perform in real use.

What comes next

Pennymac plans to expand AI agents into more areas, including income calculation, the closing process, and AI assistants that talk directly with customers. Szakaly said he believes the company can reach more than 80% automation in its fulfillment process.

He said the bigger question for him is what this means for his team. He asked how to help employees build new skills and shift their work toward reviewing AI output and handling escalations, rather than doing repetitive tasks themselves.

His plan is to move workers away from repetitive tasks and toward harder cases that need a human touch. He said the goal is to train associates to handle the complicated situations that still require people.

If you want to understand how AI is changing the mortgage process, a good next step is to ask your own lender directly what tools they use and how much human review backs up those tools.

Pennymac’s AI-driven workflows are easier to visualize when paired with a clear ai image for posts that illustrates automated loan processing.

Much like post content automation helps publishers schedule and streamline their workflows, Pennymac’s AI tools aim to reduce manual steps in loan processing.
