Boost Amazon Nova’s Tool Use with Custom Model Tuning
Amazon’s new Nova LLMs, launched at re:Invent 2024, offer cost-effective, state-of-the-art performance across three variants: Micro (text-only), Lite (multimodal), and Pro (multimodal, high-performance). This article details how to significantly improve their tool-usage capabilities through customization. Nova models, accessible via Amazon Bedrock‘s Converse and Invoke APIs, can integrate with external tools (APIs, computational frameworks) to enhance their functionality and handle complex tasks. The key to improved performance lies in fine-tuning these models using custom datasets. The authors demonstrate this by creating a synthetic dataset of tool calls, including various tools like weather APIs, Wikipedia searches, and terminal commands, structured in JSON format. This dataset is then used for supervised fine-tuning via the Amazon Bedrock console, adapting Nova models for precise tool selection and argument generation. Results show substantial accuracy improvements after fine-tuning, especially for the smaller, faster Micro model. For instance, the fine-tuned Micro model’s tool call accuracy jumped from 75.8% to 95%, exceeding even the base Pro model. While the Pro model offers higher base accuracy, it comes with increased latency. Fine-tuning allows for a balance between accuracy and speed, making it suitable for resource-constrained environments. The process involves formatting data for Amazon Nova‘s chat template, uploading to S3, creating a fine-tuning job in the Bedrock console, and then hosting the fine-tuned model for inference using the Invoke API. The article provides code examples for API interaction and dataset formatting. This approach is particularly beneficial for building robust, agentic workflows where accurate tool use is crucial for efficient AI decision-making. However, creating and validating the custom datasets requires significant effort and expertise.
Advanced ai automation tuning techniques can significantly enhance Amazon Nova‘s ability to understand and execute complex tool-based workflows more effectively.
While Amazon Nova offers powerful capabilities, many developers also explore chatgpt automation tuning techniques to enhance their AI model performance across different platforms.
